What to Grow in Summer

Summer is harvest season — and also the time for succession sowings to keep beds productive into autumn. From the first courgettes and beans to the peak tomato and cucumber harvest, these crops are all active across the summer months.

A warm-climate crop that needs a long, hot season. In the UK it performs best in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Start early, keep it consistently warm, and you'll be rewarded with tender pods from midsummer right through to the first frost.

Expert Tips

Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Container plants may need daily watering in hot spells.

Pick courgettes, beans, and cucumbers every 2–3 days

leaving them on the plant signals it to stop producing. Regular picking keeps yields high.

Succession sow fast crops (radish, lettuce, spring onion, spinach) every 3 weeks to replace harvested plants and keep beds full.

Feed hungry crops

tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers need a high-potash liquid feed every 1–2 weeks once fruiting starts.

Mulch beds with compost or wood chip to retain moisture and reduce watering frequency during dry periods.
