About growing Peas in the UK
When should I sow peas in the UK?
Sow peas from February under glass or March–June outdoors. Autumn sowings (October–November) of hardy varieties overwinter for an earlier spring crop. Avoid sowing in cold, waterlogged soil.
Do peas need support?
Yes — most pea varieties are climbers and need support from day one. Use canes, twiggy sticks, netting or a trellis. Even dwarf varieties benefit from some support to keep pods off the ground.
Why are my pea plants yellow?
Yellowing pea plants often indicate nitrogen deficiency (unusual, as peas fix their own nitrogen), waterlogging, or pea moth damage. Check the roots are healthy and the soil drains freely.
How do I know when peas are ready to harvest?
Harvest peas when the pods are plump and well-filled but still bright green. Pick regularly — leaving pods on the plant signals it to stop producing. Mangetout and sugarsnap types are harvested earlier when flat or just filling.
